Points of Pride

Heywood Elementary School 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to mentor kindergarten through third grade students through the Trojan Pals program. These leaders often have breakfast with their mentees, or have a set time in the day that they check in with their Pal.

Dear Students, Parents, Staff, and Community Members,

Welcome to Heywood, where staff and students work collaboratively to dream big, work hard, and succeed. The Heywood community is known for its loving, supportive, and inclusive environment, resulting in an exceptional educational experience. Our staff carefully analyzes the needs of each student to determine the best steps for instruction and social emotional support, resulting in increased achievement and a safe, cheerful environment.

We encourage citizenship and communication, and our caring students step up to every challenge. Our students support the Heywood community through the following groups:

  • Student Council
    • Elected members run food drives and many school events and activities
  • Trojan Pals
    • Older students mentor younger students
  • The Trojan Way PBIS Team
    • Students submit applications and are chosen by committee to represent positive leadership and solve problems within the school.
  • Snack Pack Squad
    • These students are responsible for counting and delivering weekly snack packs.
  • Safety Patrol
    • This student team ensures families are able to cross the street safely before and after school.

Multiple systems of support are in place to ensure our students experience high academic achievement:

  • Tiered Positive Behavior and Intervention Support Teams
  • Academic Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Team
  • Daily scheduled intervention time for reading and math
  • 15 General Education Teachers
  • 4 United Arts Teachers
  • 3 Intervention Specialists that provide inclusion and intervention support.
  • 2 Title Reading Specialists
  • 3 Related Services Staff for Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Occupational Therapy
  • 4 Instructional Aides
  • School Counselor provides small group and whole group social emotional learning as well as family support
  • Private Counselor through Samaritan Behavioral Health
  • Absence Intervention Team

Heywood is a part of a very supportive community, including an active Parent Teacher Organization. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from our PTO, the Troy Foundation, and many other local businesses. Their involvement is a critical component of our success and we look forward to continuing our partnerships. If you would like to visit our beautiful school in person, contact me for a tour. We are very proud of our students and staff and welcome community visitors!

Yours in education,

Sara Wagner
